Dr. Stuckwisch has been serving as Division Superintendent of Portsmouth Public Schools since January 2003. Over the past eight years, he has led the division to achieving full accreditation from the Virginia Department of Education for all of its twenty K-12 schools.

Dr. Stuckwisch believes that the most important ingredient of a quality school system is effective teaching. He views himself first and foremost as a teacher. While technology, facilities, and programs are important, the most valuable aspect of any school is the quality of its instruction. Increasing teacher compensation was Stuckwisch’s greatest challenge and achievement in his early years in Portsmouth. With a stabilized teaching corps, Portsmouth’s public schools have shown continuous improvement.

Dr. Stuckwisch believes that a school division’s most important measure of success is the opportunities available to seniors as they graduate from high school. To that end, Career and Technical Education, STEM education and early college have become hallmarks of Portsmouth Public Schools. Although Portsmouth is an historic public school division, Dr. Stuckwisch’s thinking and actions are focused only on the future. He notes, “The future is where our students are heading; we must be with them to assist them.”

Dr. Stuckwisch has more than 39 years in public education. Over those decades he has served as a science teacher, soccer coach, and high school principal. He has entered his twenty-first year of serving as a Virginia division superintendent. He holds degrees from Wittenberg University (Ohio), SUNY at Buffalo, and Virginia Commonwealth University. He has been married to his wife Nancy for 41 years. They have two grown children and four grandchildren.

Dr. Stuckwisch comments, “Serving in public school is not only my life’s work, but also my professional passion.”
