Spring Music Showcase
Posted on 04/12/2017

Portsmouth Public Schools boasts an array of music opportunities. Our students maintain a busy performance schedule in the spring. Here are highlights of a few recent events.

Performing with the pros

PPS student musicians recently participated in the Virginia Symphony Orchestra’s SOAR program. SOAR stands for School/Orchestra Artistic Residency. Portsmouth Public Schools is a recipient of the Virginia Symphony Orchestra’s SOAR Program Grant. It provides middle and high school band students and teachers five coaching sessions on specific instruments from Virginia Symphony Orchestra members at no charge to the school division. This year, the student musicians, PPS teachers and VSO members performed at an All-City Secondary Band Concert as the culminating activity at Wilson High.

A mighty chorus

The Churchland High School Concert Choir sang with the U.S. Air Force Band and Singing Sergeants at an April finale concert at Willet Hall. The student choir, which is led by PPS Choral Director Robin Duncan, sang "God Bless America" with the Air Force Band. The students beamed with pride. They learned how to sign up for military service as well as how to use their talents in service to their country.

Music inspiration from the U.S. Army TRADOC Band

Lakeview Elementary students enjoyed a concert from the Magnolia Winds Quintet during “Music in Our Schools” Month in March. Students in kindergarten through fifth grades listened intently to the Quintet perform a number of selections. They got a chance to view the instruments up close and talk to the performers. The Quintet is a portion of The United States Army Training and Doctrine Command (TRADOC) Band. According to its website, the band “provides musical support for TRADOC's areas of interest by fostering troop morale, unit esprit, and relationships between the Army and civilian communities. In all activities, the Soldiers of the TRADOC Band will exemplify the excellence of America's Army.”
