Portsmouth Chapter of Links, Inc. sponsored the "Locs of Love" project involving I.C. Norcom High Cheerleaders
In Portsmouth Public Schools, we believe in giving back to the community, especially to those in need.
Recently, the I.C. Norcom High Cheerleaders showed care and compassion to women in the community going through breast cancer. The Portsmouth Chapter of The Links, Inc. contacted to I .C. Norcom Cheerleaders to assist them in their community service project of making wigs for the Hampton Roads Cancer Society. They created wigs in a variety of colors, lengths, and styles for women who are battling cancer and have lost their hair due to side effects of treatment. The cheerleaders called their act of kindness “Locs of Love.”
Mrs. Valora Baskerville of The Links, said the project will help women while they're going through a difficult time.
"Sometimes people just don't know where to go, so the little things really help," she said. "To know that someone cares is so important."
Mrs. Baskerville has family members and friends who were diagnosed with cancer, so this project really hits close to home.
The Links organization has partnered with the American Cancer Society for years, including volunteering at the Relay for Life and setting up information tables at community events. The "Locs of Love" project is a new initiative for the local chapter. Members bought the wig materials and food for the students.
The cheerleaders spent several hours carefully sewing together each wig.
Their coach is the I.C. Norcom High Science Department Chairperson, Janeen Perry-Campbell.
“Giving back teaches the cheerleaders lessons in compassion and community service. I want the ladies to not only be leaders on the court and field, but also in their communities.”, she said.
The I.C. Norcom High Cheerleaders perform several community service projects during the school season. This is the final service project of the year.
