Our Mission:

The Portsmouth Reading Council serves as a professional organization actively engaged to promote literacy in the Portsmouth City Public Schools and surrounding communities. In collaboration with the Virginia State Reading Association (VSRA) and the International Reading Association (IRA), the Portsmouth Reading Council is committed to providing opportunities for professional growth and the creation of lifelong readers and learners in a diverse community.

Our Goals:

To increase community awareness and membership in the Portsmouth Reading Council
To support the professional growth of educators through conferences, publications, and affiliations with VSRA and IRA
To enhance student appreciation of literature through the Young Readers and Young Authors programs
To encourage community support through literacy events
To support international literacy
