CHURCHLAND ELEMENTARY LIBRARY
The Churchland Elementary library is a happening place. Classes have library instruction during their Encore schedule and students check-out books during Open Library time each day.
The majority of books in our library are shelved by their Accelerated Reader level, to make it easier for students to locate books on their reading level. The reading levels range from AA (0.1—0.9) to L (9th grade and above). Students in grades 4-6 may check-out two books at a time, grades K-3 one book at a time. Third graders can check-out two books starting the second semester of the year. Parents must give permission for their students to check out two books.
Student helpers, called Library Pages, help check-out books, return books to their correct shelves, and help keep the book shelves straight. Pages are students in fourth and fifth grade who come to the library once a week for30 minutes. Parent volunteers also help keep the library running smoothly. The library greatly appreciates both its volunteers and Pages.
The librarian oversees Renaissance Learning by adding and deleting students and classes to the AR and AM programs. Parent Connect is an important part of Renaissance. Parents can see how their students perform on AR quizzes and can find book titles that are on their child’s reading level. Teachers will send home the website and username and password needed for each student, so that parents can access Parent Connect. If there are any questions you can e-mail the librarian at miriam.hartman@pps.k12.va.us.
The PTA sponsors three Scholastic Book Fairs that are held in the library each school year: One in November, one in March, and a BOGO Fair in June. These Book Fairs give parents the opportunity to purchase new books and related items for their students, friends, and family.
When you are visiting Churchland Elementary, make sure you come by the library and say hello, check out our books and maybe even volunteer!
